How a paired exchange works
Two-way swap: Donor A isn't compatible with Patient A, and Donor B isn't compatible with Patient B. But Donor A is compatible with Patient B, and Donor B with Patient A—so both patients can be transplanted.
Three-way or pooled swaps: Sometimes three or more pairs are matched in a coordinated cycle.
Chains (domino/NEAD): An altruistic donor gives to Patient 1; that patient's intended (but incompatible) donor then gives to Patient 2, and so on—creating a life-saving sequence.
A friendly example
